Titas Gas Leak Repair

This project reduces natural gas leaks from a gas distribution network in Bangladesh through the use of an advanced leak detection and repair program that would not be feasible without carbon credit revenue.

Located in Greater Dhaka, Bangladesh, this project reduces natural gas leaks from a gas distribution network in Bangladesh through the use of an advanced leak detection and repair program. Natural gas is a potent greenhouse gas and the technology is available to detect and repair pipeline leakage. But, without carbon credit revenue, deploying that technology would not be economical (or otherwise required) in Bangladesh. Beyond being highly additional and conservative with its emission reduction calculations, this project also supports the safety and well-being of local communities by improving their access to a cleaner source of energy.

In the news

  • The health impact of living near a fossil fuel gas leak

    BBC · 6/24/2024

Our take: Methane gas leakage from pipelines isn’t just an issue that Titas faces; pipelines are leaking methane all over the world, including in the United States. These leaks can lead to significant health and safety impacts, in addition to the large impact they have on global climate change. Luckily, projects like Titas are working to stop these leaks.

  • NDB to give $443m to replace decades-old leaky gas pipelines

    The Business Standard · 10/23/2023

Our take: The New Development Bank (NDB), is expected to provide financing for Titas to replace decades-old pipelines in Dhaka and Narayanganj. This loan will be critical for Titas to be able to continue making life-saving repairs to their pipeline and will help strengthen the efficacy of this carbon project. We believe that this doesn’t negate the project’s additionality, as the project has been diligent about including this loan and other grants in its financial reporting.

  • Integrity Council Tightens Standards for Carbon Credits in Renewable Energy

    ESG News · 8/7/2024

Our take: The ICVCM has widely been considered the leading authority on carbon quality. They found that carbon projects that detect and repair methane leaks, such as Titas, are some of the highest quality projects available today in the voluntary carbon market. While a CCP label isn’t enough to define quality, it still serves as a useful quality indicator, particularly when supported by project-level due diligence.

  • 70% of Titas pipelines on life support or expired for decades

    The Business Post · 6/26/2024

Our take: The Titas gas pipeline has been in desperate need of repair or replacement for many years. Because 70% of the pipeline components are operating beyond their recommended useful lifespan, the pipeline has had numerous issues with leaks and even fatal explosions. While this supports the additionality claim for this project, it also shows that the project alone will not be enough to fix all the issues this pipeline has. However (see below), the project developer is also applying for numerous grants and loans to further improve this pipeline. ‍
